ATV Cleaning Guide
Cleaning your ATV every once in a while is important from a maintenance standpoint. Regular cleanings can help keep dirt out of the engine, as well as help discourage structural deterioration. This guide from Cool Springs Powersports will walk you through the process of cleaning your ATV.
Scrape or Soak the Mud Away
Washing your ATV will go much easier if you start by scraping or hosing away the first layer of mud. Make sure that you are washing your ATV on the right kind of surface. The dirt and muck that your ATV picks up will often be filled with wild seeds. You can end up with a lot of foreign grasses and weeds if you’re not careful about your runoff. For best results, wash your ATV on a concrete surface.
Should You Use A Pressure Washer?
ATV manufacturers typically advise against using a pressure washer to clean your quad. A power jet of water can do a surprising amount of damage if you’re not careful. If you do go ahead with cleaning your ATV using a pressure washer, select a tip that won’t create a “cutting spray” and hold back on the amount of pressure you use. Never directly spray your ATV’s electrical components, bearings, and fuel system.
Add Soap & Scrub
Scrub your ATV down using bike soap or automotive detergent and a scrub glove or sponge. Pay particular attention to your ATV’s plastic components, including the seat, frame, and wheels. A stiff brush can be used to help clean the harder to reach areas, while degreaser will help you remove any oily spots. Check the degreaser bottle for instructions on how long to keep it on your quad before wiping it off.
Dry It Off
If conditions are warm and dry, you can choose to simply let your ATV air dry. If you need to get your ATV dry as quickly as possible, wipe it down with a lint-free towel. Use an air compressor on harder to reach areas.
Polishing
Once your ATV is completely dry, apply a plastic polish and wipe it down. Be very careful when spraying the polish near your ATV’s seat. Plastic polish can make surfaces very slippery, potentially making the ATV dangerous to ride if handled incorrectly.
