Choosing the Right ATV
Finding the perfect ATV starts with picturing how you hope you use your 4 wheeler. Think about what type of terrain you'll traverse. Different brands, such as Honda, Kawasaki, and Yamaha, make models tailored to different terrain options. You'll likely want one designed for rugged turf, so look for vehicles with higher power capacities to push through slopes and muddy areas.
Then think about what features you'll need. Look for an ATV with towing and storage capacity. You'll need to lug around your gear and later your game. You may want to look for a 4 wheeler capable of handling other passengers. That way, you can go on a hunting excursion with a buddy. Knowing what features you need will help you search for models that meet those needs.
Finally, you will want to create a budget. It's too easy to fall in love with an expensive model and buy something outside of your means. Think about the maximum amount you can spend and stick to it. Don't forget to consider alternative buying options, such as financing through a dealership.
Gear to Bring
Once you find your perfect ATV, your next step is to gather up the necessary safety gear. You'll want a helmet, long-sleeve clothing, riding boots, layers if it's cold, and an orange safety vest so that other hunters can see you. You'll also want to be prepared for emergencies, so pack along a first aid kit and a survival kit (including items such as a GPS messenger device and a toolkit).
While it's not gear, there's one more thing you should consider bringing: a friend! They can provide assistance or send for assistance if something happens to you. Plus, they'll make your hunting trip more fun!
Handling Difficult Terrain
While you hunt, you're bound to encounter tough terrain. To go up a hill on your ATV, approach it straight on. Stand up and shift your weight forward. Hit the hill with plenty of speed so that you can get the momentum you need. Use the lowest gear possible in four-wheel-drive. It'll give you a steady movement so you don't spin out.
To go down a hill on your 4 wheeler, downshift to the lowest gear in four-wheel-drive to slow it down. Try to avoid slamming on your brakes or turning from side to side. Otherwise, you may end up sliding in your ATV. Avoid hills that pose bad traction issues (like mud).
Go carefully over obstacles like logs or rocks. They can move around beneath your weight. Approach them at a perpendicular angle and go slow if you can't avoid them.
