ATV Maintenance Tasks
Your all-terrain vehicle (ATV) is designed to give you the power you need to conquer any type of terrain when off-road riding. However, your powersports vehicle can only serve you well if you do your part to keep it properly maintained. Here are some basic ATV maintenance tasks that you can easily complete at home to ensure that your ATV functions well between professional tune-ups.
Read Your Owner’s Manual
Before you do anything else, it’s a good idea to review the owner’s manual that came with your ATV to see what the manufacturer recommends in terms of maintenance and products to use. Sticking to the schedule of tasks that the manufacturer suggests is a good way to ensure that you’re properly taking care of your specific make and model of ATV.
Check Tire Pressure & Condition
The tires on your ATV take a real beating with how much hard terrain they cover, so you need to keep a close eye on their pressure and condition. Use a tire-pressure gauge to check each tire and air them up to the specified psi levels on the side of the tire. Look for signs of damage, including cracks in the sidewall, bald spots, or embedded objects. Never ride on bad tires!
Change Fluids & Filters
The oil in your ATV’s engine needs to be changed on a regular basis to ensure that sufficient clean oil can adequately coat all the parts of the engine to keep it running smoothly. You should also change out the oil filter and the air filter at the same time; if you ride in very dusty conditions, you may need to change your filters and oil more frequently. Make sure you’ve always got plenty of clean gasoline in your tank and that your radiator has enough coolant as well.
