Picking the Right ATV

If you’re a new rider, it can be a big job to try and wade through the many types of ATVs that are out there to find the one that’s right for you. When you start shopping you may be tempted to lean towards an ATV with a larger engine, but this can be a big misstep if you’re not experienced on the trail. Too much engine can make a novice feel like they’re not in control of the ATV, and lead to accidents, so if you’re just starting out pick something with a smaller engine displacement to err on the side of caution. Many manufacturers produce ATVs with engines around 250 to 300 ccs that are ideal for older teens and learning adults so look for these when you’re shopping. If you’re shopping for your kids, then you can choose from a solid selection of youth model ATVs that are purpose built for riders who are just learning to ride, with functions like automatic CVT transmissions, throttle limiters, and keyed ignitions so you can keep a degree of control while they’re still getting their bearings.

Aside from the power of your ATV, you’ll need to choose a style. The two primary types of ATV are utility ATVs and sport ATVs. Utility ATVs are the most common, featuring boxy body shapes, cargo racks, tow hitches, and two-up seats so you have plenty of practical features you can harness for work applications. Sport ATVs typically have a sleeker more aerodynamic body shape, and are equipped with more robust suspension systems so riders experience a smoother ride even when hitting the trail aggressively.

Yamaha also has some great options available in the form of their YFZ line, and the Grizzly® and Kodiak® utility ATVs.

Other Gear

So you’ve chosen the perfect ATV, you’re ready to ride, right? Not quite. Before you hit the trail you need to make sure you’re equipped with all of the right safety gear. Your first (and most important) piece of gear will be your helmet. If you choose a visorless helmet, you’ll also need a set of goggles to protect your eyes. Proper safety on the trail also requires a set of sturdy boots with ankle support, long pants, and a long sleeve shirt/thick jacket. Finally, pick yourself up a good set of gloves that will protect your hands without inhibiting your ability to control the ATV.
