Preventing PWC Theft
One reason why PWCs are so popular is that they offer many of the same things that boats do in a package that is much lighter and easy to transport. Sadly, this also makes PWCs easier to steal. This guide from Cool Springs Powersports has some tips on how you can help prevent your PWC from getting stolen.
On the Water
If you even need to leave your PWC unattended while out on the water, be sure to chain it up or find someone you can trust to watch it. Keep your lanyard on your person, not attached to the vehicle or otherwise lying around. You should also be sure to utilize any built-in security features your PWC might have installed.
On the Trailer
Keeping your PWC safe while it is on the trailer is a bit more difficult. Heavy-duty drill-proof trailer locks will deter thieves, but they’re a bit expensive. There’s more than one type of trailer lock, of course, so do your research and find one that works for your needs. If you’re hauling your PWC trailer, always park in a safe, well-lit location that is fully in view of any nearby security cameras. If someone else is traveling with you, ask them to park directly behind your trailer so that no one can hitch it without your permission. Measures like installing a motion-sensor alarm can also help keep your PWC safe. Finally, make sure that your tow vehicle is fully secure.
In Storage
Ideally, you should store your PWC in a secure garage. If there’s no garage available nearby, somewhere behind a locked gate is your best bet. If you have no choice but to store your trailer in an open lot, do what you can to make your trailer less accessible. Install a wheel lock, park directly behind the trailer, and turn the hitch to the side. If you’re storing your trailer for weeks or months at a time, consider temporarily removing your trailer’s wheels. Locking lug nuts can be used to prevent would-be thieves from placing wheels on your trailer.
Additional Tips
Take photos of your PWC, its Hull Identification Number, engine compartment, your trailer, and any other identifying features. This will make recovering your PWC easier should it be stolen. In general, you should try to make stealing your PWC as difficult as possible. Thieves generally prefer easier marks, and will be less likely to go after your PWC if they think they’ll need to put a lot of effort into it.
