Troubleshooting Issues With Your UTV

Your trusty utility terrain vehicle or UTV is capable of taking you on off-road adventures or helping you complete tasks around your property or work site. With regular maintenance, your UTV should be able to perform well, but there may be occasions when your vehicle isn’t acting the way it should. Here are some common issues that owners have with their UTVs, along with the resolutions to get you back on the trail.

General Problems

Sometimes, you may have an issue with your UTV that doesn’t seem to stem from any particular part or system. Here are some of those problems, along with potential causes:

  • Brakes that grind or fail: If your UTV is out of brake oil or your braking system has air in it, you may find that your brakes aren’t working properly. Brake pads that are worn out or loose parts in the braking system can also cause grinding or stalling.
  • Not enough power: Your UTV may lose power if the CVT transmission is sliding, requiring you to replace the clutch or the belt. If your parking brake isn’t working right, this can also cause power loss.
  • Loud transmission noises: If your transmission gears are worn out and need to be replaced, the transmission may make a lot of noise.

Battery Issues

The battery on your UTV may be the root cause of some of your issues, including: 

  • Nonfunctional starter: If your UTV’s starter isn’t working, then the battery is probably dead. You may also need to grease the terminals and make sure they’re connected tightly.
  • Corrosion: If your battery’s terminals are corroded, you’ll need to clean them off, lubricate them, and tighten connections. Sometimes, they may be so corroded that you have the replace the battery.
  • Low electrolyte levels: There may be a leak in the battery’s electrolyte cell that’s causing it to lose fluids, requiring you to replace the whole battery.
