Diagnosis should always be the first step when it comes to side by side maintenance and repair. Identifying the source of the issue early will allow you to identify the source of the problem and direct your energy towards solving it. It will also help you figure out if you have the tools and experience to resolve the matter yourself or whether you need to schedule a service appointment. This guide from Cool Springs Watersports will walk you through the steps necessary to troubleshoot maintenance issues related to your side by side.

Battery Issues

If your side by side is slow to start, check the battery. An undercharged battery can be recharged, while a dead one will need to be completely replaced. If nothing’s wrong with the battery, check the terminal connections and circuity. Some UTV models come equipped with a refillable battery. If the refillable battery’s electrolyte levels are dropping faster than they should, check the cell for any cracks or leaks. A damaged refillable battery will need to be replaced.

Engine Trouble

When it comes to a side by side’s engine, there are a number of different things that can go wrong. The most effective way to deal with engine trouble is to go through part by part, checking everything to make sure that it all functions as it should. Possible issues include a clogged injector, an empty fuel tank, a dirty or broken spark plug, a ruined ignition coil, or a wrecked crankshaft position sensor. If the engine comes up clean, take a look at the fuel system. Make sure that the fuel tank, filter, electric fuel pump, and injector are all functioning properly.

Overheating Engine

A side by side’s cooling system ensures that the vehicle doesn’t overheat. A fully functional cooling system is important since overheating can seriously damage your side by side. If your side by side seems to overheat too easily, check the coolant and refresh it if necessary. You should also make sure that the radiator cap is kept tight and the coolant flow path is free of corrosion. The problem might also lie with the cooling fan.
